The Chinese 'wangjin' and the Korean 'gat' in the Chinese drama 'Sanctification 14 Years'

The differences between the Chosun dynasty's wangjin (Korean drama: 'Kingdom') and the Ming dynasty's wangjin (Chinese drama: 'The Imperial Doctress')

Chinese netizen review of the drama 'Sanctification 14 Years', a drama about the Ming dynasty, asking why the drama is "so Korean" and why the characters are dressed like they're from the Chosun dynasty and wearing 'gat' similar to the Goryeo dynasty, and that she thought the drama was Korean at first.

Hanfu dress from the Ming dynasty, qipao from the Qing dynasty - similarities between the hanfu and hanbok have led netizens to question whether Chinese dramas are trying to lump the hanbok in with the hanfu and eventually claim the hanbok as hanfu.

1. [+604, -2] Dirty. It's the first thing I think whenever I read any articles about Chinese these days.

2. [+365, -6] For years now, I've noticed that Chinese dramas depict maids or slaves wearing dresses similar to the hanbok, as if they're trying to give the impression that Koreans have been slaves to them in history. It's disgusting and our government isn't doing anything about it.

3. [+132, -3] Whenever I watched Chinese dramas.. I kept wondering why people were wearing hanbok.. China is crossing the line now. They keep dressing Chinese slaves and maids in hanbok but our government doesn't do anything about it. Imagine if a Korean drama dressed slave characters in traditional Chinese clothing? They would've thrown a fit.

4. [+105, -1] There is evidence left by the art of Elizabeth Keith that preserves our country's traditional dress and differentiates us from China and Japan without dispute. China would only be harming themselves by trying to steal another country's culture like this.

5. [+16, -0] Can the Chinese please start stealing our Hangeul too? I'm so tired of having to memorize all the thousands of primitive Hanja.

6. [+16, -1] China's stealing our skills, our culture, they're just of no help to us at all

7. [+11, -0] This is primarily a problem of distorting the truth of our histories. If China claims that this isn't a problem, then we should start dressing the slaves in our historical dramas in traditional Chinese clothes too.

8. [+9, -0] It makes me angry that we can't do anything when they're blatantly stealing our culture like this.

9. [+8, -0] How can they have such a rich history of their own and still drool over the cultures of other countries?

10. [+7, -0] Start dressing the maids in our dramas in Chinese clothing
