Article: "Schools need to teach about racism" national petition arises out of 'coffin dance' controversy

1. [+2,263, -155] What are they talking about? If anything, this controversy has fired up anti-Black sentiment where there wasn't any before ㅋㅋ

2. [+1,699, -39] Black people should start by learning not to be racist against Asians

3. [+1,023, -79] Really.. a national petition now? People are really calling this a racism issue? Do you really think those kids took those pictures with the intent to be racist? Obviously they just wanted to take something unique, something fun... I can't believe so many others are saying this and that about it. I dare you to find a country less racist than us...

4. [+656, -42] Why are there so many overly righteous people in our country? Wasn't this wrapped up with the people from the meme saying they were fine with it? How can any of you function in society with how triggered you get??

5. [+519, -56] They're crossing the line now ㅋㅋㅋ this will only fuel anti-Black sentiment

6. [+267, -7] Sam Okyere had no problem slanting his eyes, and even going as far as to check Choi Yeo O's body up and down and then claiming that it's what they do in Ghana when he got called out on it. He kept harassing Choi Yeo O on TV not too long ago by staring at her body and calling her beautiful.

7. [+165, -4] Asians suffer more racism abroad than Black people

8. [+96, -3] Tired of every little matter being taken to a national petition

9. [+79, -3] But didn't the original meme leader put out a positive response...? If you look at the other parodies featured on his account, you can see that a lot of other Asians did the blackface too.. why are they let off the hook? I honestly think this is all because people have become addicted to witch hunting others and hating on them.

10. [+74, -3] What a joke ㅋ Black people are worse with their racism against Asians ㅋ have you not see the clips of Asians being beat and put down by Black people? ㅋ Why should Koreans be given racism education? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Why only our country and not other countries too? Who came up with this foolish idea?

1. [+1,584, -63] And yet the leader of the meme himself congratulated the kids on their graduation ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

2. [+1,644, -289] A petition now? ㅋㅋㅋ Enough's enough. If those students had dressed like girls, would they be putting down women then? What we need right now isn't racism education but to allow our students to express their creativity freely without boomers looking down on them, tsk tsk.

3. [+1,365, -242] To put it into perspective for us, I'm sure it's the same as westerners finding an Asian TV show funny and copying it with innocent intentions but slanting their eyes in the process. But that's under the assumption that those westerners didn't know the racial implications of slatning your eyes. It may not be a big deal to them but it's a put down for Asians. I think a lot of people here don't know what real racism is, and 'blackface' has been known globally to be a racist gesture. Even if the students didn't know about it, that doesn't make it not racist. Blackface is racist to Black people the same way slatning eyes is racist to Asians.

4. [+916, -234] I get that racism education needs to be furthered but I honestly don't see how this issue specifically is a matter of race.. or am I a part of the problem? I think Black people are victimizing themselves by thinking that blackface is racist... Isn't the more important point what the intent was behind the students painting themselves black?

5. [+803, -209] If the parody was meant to be racist, they would've put themselves in chains and dressed like slaves. Instead, they were merely copying a Ghana funeral.

6. [+724, -238] But did those kids intend to be racist is all I'm asking ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+556, -84] What's going on when the meme leader himself said it was okay on Instagram?

8. [+768, -337] This was just a parody, why are people taking it so seriously!! So frustrating!! How in the world is this racist?? They copied an existing video, how is that racist? Just painting your skin black because you're copying the way a Black person looks is racist? What a joke!

9. [+561, -165] No, but really, why is this racist;;; They're not turning Black people into a caricature, they copied an existing Black figure. I'd understand if their intent was to be funny by painting their lips black like the caricature example shown in the article but they were just copying someone who happened to be Black. So are we not allowed to parody Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson or any other Black star? We can only copy the clothing? This isn't a racist instance, this is an instance where the person the kids were copying happened to be Black.

10. [+258, -14] The Uijeongbu High students received permission from the original meme figures. They were granted the permission. The students went ahead with the parody. The meme leader posted the parody picture and congratulated them on their graduation. So why is a third party causing this fuss?
