Q. You finally made a comeback with your new solo album. How have you been?
Jo Kwon: I've done a lot of things in 2017. Before starting preparing for my new album, I made an appearance in musical "The Evil Dead". And after signing with Cube Entertainment, I've been preparing for my comeback.
Q. You've left JYP and made a contract with Cube.
Jo Kwon: Yeah, I've been in JYP for 16 years, and I know I was regarded as the representative artist of JYP. I was happy with JYP, but I thought I've been in JYP long enough. I needed a turning point, and as a 30-year-old man, I needed a fresh start.
Q. How do you like your life as Cube's artist?
Jo Kwon: When I filmed the music video of my new song "Lonley", all the artists of Cube including CLC, BTOB and Pentagon visited me to cheer me up. Hyuna couldn't come due to her busy schedule, but I was very thankful for all of them. Actually, when I was in JYP, very few artists visited me because I've been in JYP too long, haha.
Q. Tell me about your new song "Lonely".
Jo Kwon: Right after I signed with Cube, Hong Seung Sung recommended the ballad song to me. I wanted a new challenge, but I thought it's better to make a slight change because I didn't want to make my fans feel awkward with my new song. When I worked on the song, I felt a sense of emptiness and loneliness as an entertainer.
Q. It's notable that Yoo Sunho, who has appeared in "PRODUCE 101" makes an appearance in your music video.
Jo Kwon: He's much younger than me, but he is mature for his age. At first, I was worried because he's very young and he might not have experienced feelings of love and parting. But he did really great. He said he learned all the feelings from movies even though I'm not sure that's true, haha.
Q. When you dressed up as a woman and wore high heels, you were reviled by some people. But you never stopped trying new things. Do you have a reason for that?
Jo Kwon: I've always been told I'm a unique person. I don't want to hide myself. I want to be a confident performer, and I'm never distressed by what people talk about me. I just do what I want to do.
Q. Will 2AM reunite some day?
Jo Kwon: As I always say, 2AM has never been disbanded. Of course, it's not easy for us to release our new album at the moment because Seulong, Jinwoon and I have to fulfill military duty. And you know, all the members belong to different agencies. However, when we signed with our agencies, we included the terms of contract that we can release 2AM's new album whenever we can. It is guaranteed by law.
Q. When will you join the army?
Jo Kwon: I can't join the army for the time being because it has not been long since I signed with Cube. It's not the right thing to do. I'll join the army in due time.
Q. What's your goal?
Jo Kwon: Lots of things happened in 2017. I had a personal problem, and I also tried to do my first business with actor Yoon Gye Sang. And you know, I signed with my new agency. I feel like I've been born again. As Cube's artist, I want to show myself through my new songs.
