[enter-talk] IDOLS WHO DON'T SUPPORT XENOPHOBIC DISCRIMINATION

Loading...
Do you know what Xenophobia is?
It's basically degrading foreigners and treating them poorly compared to Koreans, for example belittling them when they attempt to speak Korean. It's a foreign term.

Actually, me either, I'm not too knowledgeable about the xenophobic concept, but it's similar to creating a caricature of foreigners and degrading their actions

Seventeen has 2 Chinese members (The8 and Jun) and one American member (Joshua)
If you compared The8 to Jun and Joshua, his Korean is still poor, but the members have never laughed about the way he speaks or belittled him
When you watch their videos, they're always correcting his pronunciation and giving the definitions of words and you can really tell that they make an effort.

He still reads Korean clumsily and reads really slowly, but the members all wait for him and read together. And when he stumbles on something he doesn't know, the members take their time to explain what it means, it's really shows their humane side

Here, the Chinese member was reading the mission and was stuttering on some words and doing it slowly, and the rest of them were all reading at his pace and following him.

They're not only considerate to the foreign members, but they also pay attention to gender and racial stereotypes.

"It's kinda skin color"

"Nono this is oatmeal"

Dino said that the members all have individuality and dress very fashionably,
and they started to talk about the colors they picked, here, Jun was talking about his shirt's color and said that it was hard to define
Vernon quickly corrected to say that their skin color is not defined as "yellow"

Mingyu made a little doll he called "Bongbongie" and was wondering what gender he should give it
Dino: It looks a bit like a girl the way I see it...?
Hoshi: Eyy, where do you see it? Is it because the eyes are big...? Then what if the eyes are small??

Those are just their casual conversation and it's easy to read too much into it, but I feel like the members are always careful when it comes to gender discrimination. And seeing them correct each other all the time is pretty cool.

When they were still trainees, they released a song called "Hello", now that they made their comeback with "Clap" they released the song again and there's a part in the lyrics that used to say
"Hey girl, hello there" and they changed it to "You, you, hello there" their sense was pretty cool and I thought it was amazing from them. It feels like they don't want to create an exclusivity to one gender, and they rather include everyone.

The way Seventeen write their lyrics with wit and the way they show consideration to their foreign members is very nice. I know that Seventeen aren't the only group like that, but I will only mention them here!!

There was also another video that came out before their debut where they had to play a couple and Seungkwan said "So I'm playing the girl?" And the members responded with "Does it must be a girl...? Let's just go with male-male"

Q: It feels like a boy telling his story to a girl, it looks like you wanted to be cautious.
"Ah yes, I was very careful with the parts that might have sound like I'm belittling females. Just in case. I write the rap lyrics thinking that "what if it might still sound this way or that way" and I would show my lyrics to the female employees of the company first and ask them "How's this?". And if everyone are okay with it, I'll go with it.

Vernon and Joshua made a song called Rocket and there's no gender specified in the song. When they went to the fansign, someone asked them if they did it on purpose and they said yes. Thank you Vernon for letting us know.

"Rocket, to the people who said they liked the song, and to the carats who know about it, I acknowledge it"

Those kids are the type who jokes with spaghetti blood sausage soup, do you think that they'd joke around belittling women? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

They talked about the desire to win in a game on broadcast last time and Jeonghan said that "guys could be competitive" like that and Wonwoo said "there's no difference between genders" in a very small voice, but Jeonghan still caught it and corrected himself saying "it applies to both guys and girls" I know that there's still possibility for them to say stuff that could be problematic, but it's so nice to see them correct right away all the time

Hoshi once said out of nowhere that he thought his eyes were small and Vernon said 'Don't let others influence you about how you look like' my heart fluttered...
